FREE GOOGLE ADS AUDIT
Google Ads audit for ecommerce brands
Conversion goals, Performance Max and Shopping, brand versus non-brand, feed health and tracking, reviewed by a senior operator and judged on new customers and margin.
A Google Ads audit for an ecommerce brand checks five things: that conversion goals and values tell Smart Bidding the truth, that Performance Max and Shopping are not hiding branded or wasted spend, that the product feed is healthy, that new customers are valued above repeat buyers, and that Google’s reported revenue reconciles with the store.
Why Google accounts drift without anyone noticing
Google Ads is unusually good at looking healthy. Branded searches convert at high rates and cheap costs, Smart Bidding finds the easiest conversions first, and Performance Max blends several channels into one result. A Google account can report a strong ROAS while most of it comes from people who were already looking for the brand. The audit’s job is to separate demand Google created from demand it collected.
Waste is common even in active accounts. In WordStream’s study of 15,666 Google Ads accounts, updated June 2026, the median business wasted $1,127.54 a month (WordStream, June 2026), and Fraud Blocker’s analysis of 104 million clicks found an average invalid click rate of 11.4%, with Shopping campaigns at 7.9% (Fraud Blocker, September 2026). Both are vendor studies with their own samples, so read them as direction rather than precision. The direction is clear enough: an unaudited account is usually paying for something it does not need.
What we check in a Google Ads audit
Conversion goals, values and tracking
Primary conversion actions drive bidding; secondary actions only report. Google warns that misconfiguring these settings can prevent Smart Bidding from optimizing effectively (Google Ads Help). We check that only real purchases are primary, that values match the store after discounts, and that enhanced conversions are on: Google reports an average 11% increase in Search conversions for advertisers using enhanced conversions compared with standard conversion imports (Google Ads & Commerce Blog, September 2026). Where consent banners apply, Google says consent mode modeling recovers more than half of the ad-click-to-conversion journeys that would otherwise be lost (Google Ads Help).
Performance Max and Shopping
Performance Max is no longer a black box, if you use the reports. Google added channel performance reporting and search terms reporting to Performance Max in 2025 (Google Ads & Commerce Blog, April 2025) and raised the negative keyword limit to 10,000 per campaign (Google Ads Help). We check how much of Performance Max is branded demand, where the spend actually goes by channel, and how it overlaps with Search and Shopping. Optmyzr’s study of 24,702 Performance Max campaigns found 82% of advertisers ran it alongside other campaign types (Optmyzr, June 2025), which is exactly where overlap with Search and Shopping starts. Our Demand Gen vs Performance Max guide covers when each campaign type earns its place.
Merchant Center and the product feed
Disapproved products stop showing across Google, and mismatches between feed and landing page price or availability can trigger disapprovals before anyone notices (Google Merchant Center Help). We check diagnostics for best sellers that have quietly dropped out of Shopping, titles and attributes that limit matching, and whether feed rules are doing what the team thinks they do.
New customers versus repeat buyers
Google’s customer lifecycle goals let you bid higher for new customers, or for new customers only, across Search, Performance Max, Shopping and Demand Gen, using a customer list and the website tag (Google Ads Help). We check whether the settings are on, whether the customer list is current, and whether results are judged on new customer ROAS in the store rather than on Google’s blended figure.

Running the first pass yourself? These ten checks cover the most common sources of waste in the studies above. Work down in order, because the conversion setup at the top decides how much the rest of the list can be trusted. For context on costs, the 2026 LocaliQ benchmarks put the average search CPC for shopping, collectibles and gifts at $4.14 and the conversion rate at 4.01% (LocaliQ, June 2026).
| Check | Where to look | Healthy sign |
|---|---|---|
| Primary conversion actions | Goals summary in Google Ads | Only real purchases are primary; micro events are secondary |
| Conversion values | Compare Google conversion value with Shopify net sales | Values reflect discounts, tax and shipping consistently |
| Enhanced conversions | Conversion action settings and diagnostics | On and healthy for the purchase action |
| Brand vs non-brand | Search terms and Performance Max search term report | Branded demand is separated and judged separately |
| Performance Max channels | Channel performance report | You know where the spend actually went |
| Negative keywords | Campaign and account-level lists | Irrelevant and competitor terms excluded deliberately |
| Merchant Center health | Diagnostics and product issues | No disapproved best sellers, no price or availability mismatches |
| New customer goals | Customer acquisition settings | Set deliberately, with a current customer list |
| Search terms waste | Search terms report, last 90 days | Few high-spend terms with no conversions |
| Reconciliation | Google revenue vs store revenue by week | The ratio is stable and understood |
If two or more of these fail, fix them before raising budgets, because Smart Bidding scales whatever the data tells it to. Our guide to Google Ads for Shopify covers the Shopify-specific setup, and the break-even ROAS calculator sets the floor every campaign has to clear.
What a clean Google setup can support
A women’s fashion brand we work with raised Google spend 399% to $311K between January and August 2026, compared with the same months of 2025, while blended ROAS across all channels rose 5% to 2.77, per its Triple Whale account. Scaling a channel roughly fivefold without blended efficiency falling is what the brand achieved, with conversion tracking and new customer goals set up as this page describes.
What this does not claim: blended ROAS covers every paid channel, not Google alone; no incrementality test isolated Google’s contribution; and product and merchandising decisions moved the numbers alongside media. The full picture is in the women’s fashion case study.
What you get, and how it works
Expect three things: a check of conversion tracking against your store, a read of where campaign structure and Performance Max are leaking spend, and three fixes in priority order, yours to keep whether or not we work together. Fill in the form below, grant read-only access or share your screen, and a senior operator goes through the account before the 30 minute call. Nothing is sold on it.
The audit fits ecommerce brands spending $50K or more a month on paid media with Google Search, Shopping or Performance Max as a major line. For ongoing management, see Google Ads management, and if Meta carries a large share of the budget too, the Meta ads audit covers it. For every channel at once, request the paid media audit. Considering an agency for Shopping specifically? Our Google Shopping agency guide covers what to look for.

Common questions
How do you audit a Google Ads account?
Start with conversion tracking: which actions are primary, whether values are right, and whether enhanced conversions are on. Then review Performance Max and Shopping for branded and wasted spend, check Merchant Center for disapprovals, confirm new customer goals, and reconcile Google’s reported revenue with your store before changing bids.
What should a Google Ads audit checklist include?
Conversion goals and values, enhanced conversions and consent mode, the Performance Max channel and search term reports, brand versus non-brand performance, negative keywords, Merchant Center health, customer acquisition settings, search terms waste, and a reconciliation of Google revenue with store sales.
How often should you audit Google Ads?
A full review once a quarter, plus a focused check after a site, checkout or feed change, a new conversion action, or a large budget move. Conversion setup errors are the most expensive kind, because Smart Bidding optimizes toward them until someone notices.
Does the audit cover Performance Max?
Yes. We use the channel performance and search terms reports Google added to Performance Max, check how much of it is branded demand, and review negative keywords and asset group structure.
Is the Google Ads audit free?
Yes. It is a free 30 minute review ending with three fixes ranked by impact, with no retainer required to start and nothing pitched on the call.
