Part Time CMO for Ecommerce: What It Is, What It Costs and When to Hire One

Part time CMO graphic: a calendar with three highlighted days beside a rising bar chart in a purple to teal gradient

A part time CMO is a senior marketing executive who leads a company’s growth for a set number of hours each month instead of working for one employer full time. For an ecommerce brand, a part time CMO owns the plan, the budget and the measurement, and directs the people running the channels, without the salary and the search that a permanent hire needs.

Most founders hit the same wall. The business has outgrown founder-led marketing, but it cannot yet keep a full-time executive busy. This guide shows what a part time CMO does in a typical month, how many hours the fee really buys, how the role compares with an agency, a full-time hire and a fractional vp of marketing, and four questions that tell you whether your brand is ready.

What Is A Part Time CMO?

Part time describes the schedule, and fractional describes buying a fraction of an executive role. Most providers use the two labels for the same job, so the label matters less than three facts: how many hours you get, what is in scope and who does the execution. A good part time CMO is accountable for a number, such as new customer cost or contribution margin, and not only for a slide deck.

Our fractional CMO services page shows how we answer those three questions for ecommerce brands, and the guide to what a fractional CMO is covers the definition in more depth.

What Does A Part Time CMO Do In A Typical Month?

A list of duties hides the rhythm of the work. Here is one way a month can run at the common 20 to 40 hours. It is an illustration, not a promise, because scope changes by brand and the first month is usually heavier on diagnosis.

WeekFocusWhat comes out of it
1Review last month against the forecast: contribution margin, new customer cost, spend against planAn updated forecast and a short list of decisions to make
2Channel and creative review with the media team or agencyBudget moves and the next round of creative tests
3Measurement and store levers: reconcile platform reports with store orders, review offer and shipping ideasA reconciliation note and one or two tests to run
4Reporting and planning: a summary a founder can show a board, plus hiring and vendor callsNext month’s plan and any open decisions

How Many Hours Does A Part Time CMO Give You?

Market rates for fractional and part time CMOs run roughly $4,000 to $20,000 a month, or $150 to $500 an hour (GoFractional, 2026). The fee tells you little until you divide it by the hours. At the common 20 to 40 hours a month, a $10,000 retainer works out to $500 an hour at 20 hours and $250 an hour at 40, and 20 to 40 hours is roughly two and a half to five working days.

For context, the median base salary of a full-time ecommerce CMO in the US was about $374,068 in August 2026 (Salary.com), before bonus and equity. So a part time CMO is not a discount on executive time. You are buying a slice of senior attention, and the question is whether that slice goes to the decisions that move money.

Put the monthly hours in writing before you sign. To test whether a fee pays for itself at your own ad spend, the break-even calculation in our fractional CMO cost guide walks through it step by step.

Part Time CMO vs Fractional CMO vs Fractional VP Of Marketing

Titles overlap between providers, so judge the role by scope and authority, not by the label.

TitleWhat it usually meansWhat it usually ownsWhat to check
Part time CMOA senior marketing executive working set hoursCompany-level growth strategy, budget, measurement and vendor decisionsThe scope and the hours, in writing
Fractional CMOThe same role under a different labelThe same as aboveWhether the work is advisory only or includes execution
Fractional VP of marketingA senior leader of the marketing functionChannels, team and the weekly operating rhythmHow much authority it has over pricing input, forecasting and board reporting

A fractional vp of marketing can be enough when strategy is settled and the gap is leadership of day-to-day marketing. A part time CMO fits better when the open decisions sit above the ad accounts. For a related role, see Fractional Marketing Director: Cost, Scope, vs CMO.

Part Time CMO, Agency Or Full-Time Hire: Which Fits Your Brand?

Instead of a feature table, try this scenario test. Find the sentence that sounds most like your business.

• The founder is still the head of marketing, and every decision waits for them. The gap is leadership above the ad accounts, so a part time CMO fits.

• The strategy is settled, and you just need more hands in a channel. The gap is capacity, so an agency fits. See Ecommerce Growth Agency: What It Does, What It Costs and How to Choose One and In-House vs Agency Marketing for Ecommerce Brands.

• Marketing is big enough to keep an executive busy five days a week. A full-time CMO fits. See Fractional CMO vs Full Time CMO.

• You have an agency but nobody directing it. Some brands need both: a part time CMO sets the plan and the agency runs the channels.

Four Questions To Ask Before You Hire A Part Time CMO

1. Who owns growth strategy today? If the honest answer is the founder, on top of everything else, the role is open.

2. Do you know your contribution margin and your new customer cost? If not, a large part of the first month will go on getting those two numbers right.

3. Is the team executing without a plan, or planning without capacity? The first needs a part time CMO. The second needs more execution.

4. Can the founder commit to decisions? A part time CMO can recommend on pricing, inventory and cash, but the founder still has to decide.

A part time CMO is usually a poor fit for pre-revenue brands, and for brands spending well below about $50,000 a month on paid media, where hands-on execution is the real constraint. For more on timing, see When to Hire a Fractional CMO: 7 Signals Your Ecommerce Brand Is Ready.

How To Vet A Part Time CMO

Ask these before you agree to anything:

• How many hours a month, in writing? Divide the fee by the hours and compare the result with the market band.

• Who does the work after the contract is signed? The person in the pitch, or someone you have not met.

• Is execution included, or only advice? This decides whether the plan actually gets run.

• What should months one, two and three produce? Nobody changes a P&L in month one, so ask for specific milestones.

• What happens at the end? Notice period, handover, and what you keep, including dashboards and documents.

• Where does each quoted result come from? Ad platforms credit conversions by their own rules, so a figure that comes only from a platform report, such as one shaped by Meta’s attribution window setting, may not match the orders in your store. Ask for the store-side number too.

What A Part Time CMO Looks Like When Margins Are Thin

A womens fashion brand we work with grew sales 99% and cut new customer CPA by 21% while running at roughly a 3% net margin. At that margin, budget and tracking decisions are the business, because a small error can wipe out the profit. That is the kind of decision a part time CMO is hired to own.

What the figures do not prove: they come from the brand’s Triple Whale account and blend every channel, no holdout test separated what the ads caused from what would have happened anyway, and range and merchandising changes moved the results alongside media.

Common Questions

What Is A Part Time CMO?

A part time CMO is a senior marketing executive who runs a company’s marketing and growth for a set number of hours a month, instead of full time. They own strategy, budget, measurement and vendor decisions, and they split their time across a small number of clients.

How Much Does A Part Time CMO Cost?

Market rates run roughly $4,000 to $20,000 a month, or $150 to $500 an hour (GoFractional, 2026). A full-time ecommerce CMO has a median base salary of about $374,068 (Salary.com, August 2026), before bonus and equity. The fee depends on scope, the spend under management and whether execution is included.

Is A Part Time CMO The Same As A Fractional CMO?

In practice, yes. Both labels describe a senior marketing executive working a fraction of full time. Compare providers on hours, scope and who does the execution, not on the label.

What Is The Difference Between A Part Time CMO And A Fractional VP Of Marketing?

A fractional vp of marketing usually leads the marketing function and its channels. A part time CMO also owns company-level strategy, forecasting and board reporting. Titles overlap, so check the scope in writing.

How Many Hours A Month Does A Part Time CMO Work?

Most retainers sit between 20 and 40 hours a month, which is roughly two and a half to five working days. Get the number in the agreement, because vague hour commitments tend to shrink once the engagement is underway.

Can A Part Time CMO Run Our Ads, Or Only Advise?

It depends on the model. Some part time CMOs advise and leave execution to your team or agency. In the Plaid Testing model, the same team runs the paid media, creative testing and tracking, so the plan and the accounts answer to one person.
